If you follow me on Instagram then you already know – I spent last week in California! I don’t even know where to begin in writing about my trip… but it was nothing short of magical. Having worked most of my summer and fall away, I thought, hey why not take a vacation? It’s about time I treat myself to some time off. A good friend of mine moved down there last year, and since I’ve never been to California (or any of the west coast really), this turned out to be the perfect opportunity to go visit her and explore.
The biggest highlight for me was going to Disneyland. Twice. I grew up with Disney movies and it’s something from my childhood that has always resonated with me. I’ve never been to any Disney park so it was surreal to finally go to the “happiest place on earth.” They gave me a cute pin that says “First Visit” on it 🙂 I loved everything about it – meeting the characters, the parades (Paint The Night captured my heart and I’m sad that I only got to experience it once), even the rides were lots of fun! I’m usually not one for roller coasters but Hyperspace Mountain and Matterhorn Bobleds might have been my favourites. Star Tours and Pirates of the Carribean were great too.
My friend and I are big on concerts so it’s no surprise that in my time there we went to 2 concerts. First we went to 3OH!3. It’s been a good couple of years since I last saw them live, it was great to dance and sing along to old favourites. Two days later, we went to a meet and greet for Against The Current by Cricket Wireless/Alcatel. They were having a raffle for tickets to their concert later that night and we won! I’ve been following this band for a while now and they always put on a good performance.
On December 6, it was the two year anniversary of Emo Nite. Picture a nightclub, except instead of dance music, they play old school pop punk – Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and all that. Those bands defined my high school years. It was awesome to be in a room packed with people singing along to songs that I spent a good chunk of my life listening to. There were guest DJ’s such as Craig Owens (Chiodos) and Jordan Pundik (New Found Glory), and acoustic performances by Aaron Gillespie (Underoath/The Almost) and The All American Rejects. AAR was one of the first bands that I ever saw in concert; it was super exciting to see them play some old goodies.
Now I could sit here and write about the sights and sounds, but it’s best if I show you. The view at Santa Monica Pier was BEAUTIFUL. The pictures I took are lovely but it does not compare to the real thing. Seriously. We rode on the ferris wheel as the sun was going down and the view was breathtaking.
We went to the Hollywood sign too and that was pretty cool.
It’s kind of depressing that last week I was wearing a dress and light cardigan and now back home in Toronto I’m wearing my winter jacket. It’s already snowed 13cm a few nights ago and it’s supposed to snow more this week. Great. On the bright side – I’m already looking into travelling more next year. Who’s with me? 🙋🏻
